Netflix keeps calling the upcoming season of Black Mirror “The most unpredictable, unclassifiable and unexpected season yet,” which seems like a high bar to set. But maybe they’re onto something? The trailer for the series highlights the five standalone “films,” which range from the experience of a women who finds herself the subject of a prestige Netflix—um, I mean Streamberry—series to a mystifying, Aaron Paul-starring story set in space. And one haunting tale gets a little title card that says it’s presented by Red Mirror.
The connecting tissue is, of course, the mind of creator Charlie Brooker.
Previously, Brooker said, “Partly as a challenge, and partly to keep things fresh for both me and the viewer, I began this season by deliberately upending some of my own core assumptions about what to expect.” A statement which might, understandably, make a viewer a little skeptical of what we see in the trailer. Is anything what it seems? How does a troubled starlet fit into the Black Mirror world? Which stories feature terrifying applications of imagined technology?
Earlier this month, Netflix released the episode titles and brief synopses. All episodes were written by Brooker; the cast for this season includes Ben Barnes, Zazie Beetz, Samuel Blenkin, Michael Cera, Rory Culkin, Rob Delaney, Monica Dolan, Paapa Essiedu, John Hannah, Josh Hartnett, Myha’la Herrold, Kate Mara, Annie Murphy, Himesh Patel, Aaron Paul, Salma Hayek Pinault, Daniel Portman, Danny Ramirez, Clara Rugaard, David Shields, Auden Thornton, and Anjana Vasan.
Black Mirror arrives on Netflix June 15th.
